We have struggled with email since arriving here. Hopefully it is now all resolved. Perhaps this experience will be helpful to someone else.

We have struggled with email since arriving here. Hopefully it is now all resolved. Perhaps this experience will be helpful to someone else.

This is our first experience using Wi-Fi and we didn’t really understand how it works. We were under the impression that once connected to Wi-Fi, you have all the same capability as when you connect to a “normal” ISP. That turns out not to be true. Wi-Fi does not normally give you anything except an internet connection.

For us, the importance of that is that they do not provide SMTP services. To send email, you MUST have an SMTP server available. Well! We thought, “no problem”! We have our server available so we’ll just use it for SMTP.

Our server domain name is alegriahosting.com. We tried using that as the SMTP server but still got errors sending email. I thought the Wi-Fi service must be blocking us because that had happened to us with our ISP in both Costa Rica and Panama. I emailed them and they assured me that was not the case.

After several emails back and forth between us and the people who provide our server we finally got it to work. We needed to use mail.alegriahosting.com, not alegriahosting.com and port 26, not port 25.

The moral of the story is that if you find yourself in a similar situation and you have access to a server you may still need to contact the server provider to find out exactly what you need to do.
